Horses with Heart, a PATH INTL. Premier Accredited Center, is seeking a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor

Reports to: Program Coordinator
Full Time Position

Job Summary: Conduct an effective, safe, and basic equestrian lesson to individuals (children and adults) with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruct basic ring figures and arena patterns within a basic equestrian setting

  • Create and/or follow lesson plans, set participant goals, and provide notes following the lesson

  • Provide encouraging feedback and changes to the rider and/or parent/guardian

  • Manage volunteers, including identification of the riders, equine, and volunteers needs

  • Identify basic horse body language and communication

  • Manage equine and rider behavior, including any issues, within a lesson setting

  • Groom and tack an equine in center preferred discipline

  • Properly fit equipment to equine and participant

  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., emergency dismounts, basic horse first aid issues)

  • Matching horses and equipment to riders, including adapting tack to meet complex needs

  • Schooling/conditioning program horses

  • Identifying form and function blemishes in equines

  • •Mount and dismount ambulatory and non-ambulatory individuals with disabilities

  • Identifying areas for improvement within lessons

  • Identify, manage, and correct complex student and equine issues during a lesson

Job Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and able to pass a criminal background check.

  • Certified as a CTRI with PATH Intl. and maintain certification with continuing education and training.

  • Must be able to adapt to all equine related facilities and venues, including the use of their mounting and dismounting equipment.

  • Must have a working knowledge of equine related skills, including but not limited to their breeds, conformation, behavior, grooming, tack assessment and placement, health, training, and handling.

  • Must have a working knowledge about riding and be able to effectively recognize, identify, and communicate correct posture at all gaits, leg aides, and change of rein.

  • Must have experience in working with people with disabilities and adapting to the situation as needed. This includes knowledge of current law and policies that encourage independence (including the use of assistive devices), respect, and communication.

  • Must uphold, follow and enforce guidelines/rules as established by the HwH Board of Directors and Staff.

  • Must follow HwH policies, procedures, and attend orientations and trainings annually.

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and E-Verify.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly move around the facility with substantial walking required; to stand for long periods of time; to stoop, lift, and carry 50 pounds, and move equipment. This position may require work inside or outside the building.
