Marvelous Minis Update

The Marvelous Minis recently visited Granite Creek Health and Rehabilitation Center in Prescott, and were an attraction at the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) picnic at Jefferson Park at Mile High Middle School, also in Prescott.

The Granite Creek Health visit took place outside, in the shade of a huge tree! The residents were thrilled to be outside on a beautiful morning, and doubly thrilled to meet the Minis: Rocky, Brady, Frosty, and Katie. Katie is new to the MM herd, and is very sweet, bringing lots of “ooohs” and “aaahs” from the residents! Rocky and Brady made some very impressive friends at the BBBS picnic!

In Loving Memory…

Lois (Cutler-Kingery) Holtz was born June 23, 1935 in Floyd, Iowa and passed into the arms of her Savior and Lord September 8, 2024 in Montrose, Colorado.  She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Margaret Cutler, her sister Beverly Eldredge, husbands Henry Kingery and Roger Holtz.  She is survived by children Pam Berry, Val Drown, Jeff Kingery, Ron Holtz, Steve Kingery, Michelle Wilson and Eric Holtz, 18 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.  Lois loved spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grands!

Her strong faith sustained her through many challenges throughout her life.  She moved with her family to the Prescott Area in 1975, where she remained until fall of 2023.  She and husband Roger were part of the beginnings of Grace Baptist Church in Chino Valley where she was a member until her passing.

A celebration of her life will be held at Grace Church  in Chino Valley on October 19, 2024 at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Grace Church (Chino Valley), Horses with HEART (Chino Valley) or Touch of Care Hospice (Montrose, CO.)

Additional information:

The funeral home who handled the cremation is Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose, CO  970-249-2121.

Izae's favorite horse, Cowboy

Volunteer of the Month – Izae Vaca

Izae Vaca has been volunteering with us since July of 2022. He has a very dependable work ethic as he is at our ranch every Saturday to muck and keep our horses’ stalls spic and span. He is always willing to help others and is flexible in whatever job he does. We are very grateful that Izae has such a heart to spend his Saturdays here at HwH!

  • How long have you been with Horses with Heart?  Since August of 2022 (2 years)

Why do you volunteer at Horses with Heart? I volunteer because I like horses and enjoy getting out of the house on the weekends.

What is your favorite memory or moment at Horses with Heart? Any moment I spend with the horses.

If you could share one thing with new volunteers, what would that be? Don't walk too close behind a horse and treat them as people.

Blue Ribbon Moments

Horses with Heart has a volunteer appreciation program called Blue Ribbon Moments to recognize all the great day-to-day accomplishments of our volunteers. Nomination cards are located in the office, so when you see a fellow volunteer who is going above and beyond, please write down their name and a couple of sentences about what they have done, and drop it in the Blue Ribbon Moments container in the office. We will hold a drawing each week, and the winner receives a $5 gift card to Overflow Coffee in Chino Valley.

  • Week of September 2nd Winner: Isabel Bochenski

  • Week of September 9th Winner: Anna Sigfried

  • Week of September 16th Winner: Margaret Kavanaugh

Session 5 Begins October 14th

Time flies when you're having fun! It's hard to believe that we are about to start the last session of 2024. If you are a returning participant, there is still time to sign up for Therapeutic/Adaptive Riding, Equine Assisted Learning, Silver Saddle, and Non-Mounted Horsemanship. We still have space for new participants in Non-Mounted Horsemanship, too! Please reach out to Clarissa Donnelly, Program Director, at hwhprograms@gmail.com for more information.
