Feeder and Mucker / Barn Hand (Part-Time)
Purpose of Role / Description of Success
The feeder and mucker is essential in the care of our horses. By making sure each horse has the specialized nutritional care and clean stalls they will be able to serve our riders who are gaining confidence, increasing independence, and improving social skills through the horses’ healing power.
Essential Responsibilities
Feeding and Care (40%)
Provide the prescribed amount of food, supplements, and clean water
Prepare the food for the next team
Clean water tanks
Report observations regarding the health of a horse with both written and verbal accuracy
Mucking (40%)
Clean stalls by removing manure
Address any issues created by weather
Volunteer Leadership (20%)
Schedule and train volunteers to assist with feeding and mucking
Supervision and Training:
Horse Manager / Barn Manager
Daily physical requirements and skills to be successful
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to walk and remain standing for 2 to 3 hours at a time
Ability to work in all types of weather conditions - hot, cold, rain, snow
Qualifications:
Basic Horse Knowledge: different horse breeds, the colors of the horses, generic horse terms, understands the horse’s body parts and can label them.
Experience and ability to describe the disposition of a horse, such as cranky or upset versus content and curious.
Able to list multiple signs of colic
